Brunch is still Legal…I think

sissys

After all these Executive Orders, I’m happy to report on a happier topic.
The Bestie & I tried a new (to us, anyhow) brunch spot in Dallas.

Sissy’s Southern Kitchen is a kitzschy country kitchen on Knox-Henderson. We’ve visited twice and, with a bit of help from family, tried all (but one) recipes on the menu. Since brunch is basically my favorite meal, I believe I found my happiest place in Dallas. Which, let me be clear, is an amazing feat! I mean, this glorious little once-was house, tucked away behind a few trees and their own Valet stand, rivals bookstores and my own kitchen.
Color me impressed.

If you’re ever in Dallas and need to loosen your belt a few notches, stop by Sissy’s. They’ll be more than happy to whip up a lil’ something for you to nosh on.

These squash puppies are accompanied by whipped butter and a house-made jalapeno jam. Honestly, I could deal without the puppies, but this jam needs to be in my life. It is sweet, with a surprising bite of spice and sass that battles taste buds.

I’d never tried Fried Green Tomatoes – nor have I read the book – but my Mimi said I was missing out. So we just had to order them. Cut to this interesting take on tomatoes landing in front of us. They’re moderately thick tomatoes, evenly sliced, and generously coated in a cornmeal batter; fried to perfection, accompanied by a shrimp remoulade, green peas, and scallions. Did I say, perfection already?

The short rib hash is basically a pot roast, diced potatoes, and sunny side up eggs. I wanted to be more impressed, but this just was not among my top favorites. Don’t get me wrong – it’s still quite tasty, but this hash is simply not Sissy’s best effort here. This dish left me feeling underwhelmed.

Do you see all that buttah? Butter is an essential need to this brunch menu and it’s probably why I love Sissy’s so damn much. The bacon arrived sizzling and introduced the waffles quite nicely.

This. This here. The crab cake mac and cheese has been a Sissy’s special for a few weeks now. I must say, the chef makes a glorious mac and cheese. Don’t believe me, watch the video below. It’ll make your tummy tingly in all the best places.

Now, we were pretty full (jeans unbuttoned) by this point. Then the waitress said they made the best chocolate cake in Dallas. The reigning champ, in case you’re wondering, is the Cheesecake Factory’s Linda’s Fudge Cake. I had no choice but to order dessert.

Sadly, they looked better than they tasted. Good, but not nearly impressive enough.

I hope you have a chance to brunch here. You’ll thank me for the suggestion.

Velvet Taco Adventures

Velvet Taco Adventures

Sometimes life kicks you in the butt, stomps on your heart, punches your face and leaves you in a crumpled pile – alone and broken, expecting you to pick yourself up and get ready to have it all happen to you again tomorrow.

For those days, I recommend cake. Not too much of it, but a slice here and there never did anyone a darn bit of wrong. In fact, there’s just about nothing that a good ol’ slice of red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting can’t fix. That’s a promise.

Check out Velvet Taco, on Greenville Ave. in Dallas, Texas
A scrumptious place to park your fabulous derriere when life is just too much. Their tacos deliver – every. single. time. [No, they don’t deliver to you…maybe if you paid them the right moolah — ask ’em]

Their cake though….dayum! It’s delicious, moist and sends your taste buds on a damn-near transcendent experience.
Let’s pause for a moment and think – cake. Mmmmm!

I hope your week is wonderful, sweet and everything yummy!

Much love,

Pasta, My Pasta!

Did someone say carbs?

I have a serious, deep-down, get-in-mah-bellie, love-affair with pasta. Blame it on my Italian roots, or the fact that most Hispanics love Olive Garden. Seriously, it was a childhood staple. When I got to college however, the OG was a luxury I couldn’t afford, so I learned how to make my own dishes inspired by Tuscany via FoodNetwork and The Travel Channel. Those late night study session would have been far less memorable with plain old pizza.

Enter: My Crafty Creations Meet – Spinach & Chicken with Bowties

Mean Green Delicious!
Mean Green Delicious!

A little parmesan alfredo sauce, some frozen spinach, broccoli and cauliflower…VOILA! You’ve got yourself a scrumptious dinner. I recommend using large spinach leaves or wilting fresh spinach on your own (it’s easy, don’t flip) so that your pasta doesn’t come out looking quite so bacterial-y. Go for fierce!
Learning experiences, friends. Don’t judge.

The beau and I both share a love for pasta. However, we also realize that we cannot be stuffing our gobs with this delectable goodness all the time, so we’ve really taken to other scrumptious grainy goods.

Here we have some couscous!

Toss in some steamable couscous (Central MArket - $2), sliced bella mushrooms, onions, peppers and sirloin. What a COMBO!

The couscous is a current FAVE!
Use a table-spoon of EVOO or Butter to sauté your veggies. I used a spray or two of PAM Olive Oil to cook my sirloin. Season the steak with salt, cracked pepper and a two tablespoons of Teriyaki sauce.
This meal takes less than 20 minutes to throw together and plate. It’s also wondermous! Mmmm!

Enjoy!

Sarah
