Stress & Bar Prep

We’re about four weeks into BarPrep. Are you kinda-sorta-totally losing your mind already? You’re not the only one. Honestly, I’d be more concerned for you if you lacked panic and fatigue in your daily routine. Studying for as long and as hard as we do, it makes complete sense that you’re a frazzled ball of nerves. I am, too. It’s okay. You will be alright and you’re not going through this alone. I promise.

At the start of bar prep, I found myself dazing out for several minutes at a time listening to lectures but not actually hearing the information. During these times, I realized the need to go back and rewind to collect my thoughts and my notes. It frustrated me so much. I think it was a combination of forcing myself to listen to a recorded lecture, which never worked for me as an undergrad or graduate student. So, why the hell did I think it would work now?

Instead of grinding out the lecture time, I reached out to a professor who suggested I toss the video lectures and only read through the outlines. She also encouraged shorter reading sessions followed by a necessary break. It seemed entirely wrong, but I tried it. In having done this for a week, I can say that this version of my studies experienced a positive effect. My MBE practice scores are in a good to better range and I am on track. I was feeling off-kilter and am thrilled to settle on a studying approach that works! If the method your bar prep program suggests doesn’t work for you, don’t be afraid to change it up. Work with your learning style and their tools!

Between studying, the breaks are crucial. My friend Dax (who already aced the Bar in February) keeps posting kind, motivating words on our class facebook page. It’s incredibly thoughtful to hear from a friend, as well as have the reminder that “hey, there’s life after the bar exam.” It may seem silly, but those words – offering peace and a gentle reminder to step away from the books – are wonderful. Do what you can to take a break and give your mind some ease.

I took time off for a [much-needed] three-day weekend with some of my best friends. We plan an annual Girls’ Weekend and, holy cow, was I desperately in need of seeing these phenomenal ladies!

We visited Colorado Springs, went hiking, and talked about everything under the sun. I let go of so many thoughts I’d put energy into. I took deep, steadying breaths atop amazing cliffs and enjoyed deep-belly laughs with members of my support system.

You must deal with your stress. Figure out a way to get rid of it so you can focus the entirety of your energy on preparing for this exam. You’ll feel rested and ready to tackle the next subject when you’re not filling your mind with other stressors and situations you have no control over. You can control the effort you put into preparing for the exam, so get it done!

Here’s hoping you have an excellent study week!

Law School Depression: Grades & Guidance

hell
Law School is ROUGH but – you’ve GOT this.

THIS read made me realize how lucky I am. This semester has been grueling (more-so than last semester) for many reasons – but not one of those reasons stems from feeling alone. In fact, for my wonderful classmates who read this blog (and for those peers far and wide going through the same law school struggle) please know there are resources available for you. Talk to student services at your school. Reach out to TLAP, or the appropriate lawyer assistance program in your state. There is a support system waiting to help you – all you have to do, is call.

Law school is hard, breaks you down, and makes you question your life-plan. That’s right – it’s not just you! Everything is harder for you. Before law school, you were a great writer, logical thinker, skilled speaker. Then, the world crumbled beneath your feet and you probably feel like nothing you do is right.
Give law school your best effort. Your grades are important, sure, but they do NOT define you. The sum of your cumulative experiences matters more. Yes, you should strive to earn high marks, but sacrificing your health is not an option.

Just know – you are better than you give yourself credit for!
We all feel shaken, battered, and a little worse for wear.
You are not alone.

I cannot speak directly for my campus, but I can say they have provided multiple opportunities for us to reach out to them. Our professors and campus staff have done a great job explaining how our Texas Bar resources apply to law students. They opened the channels for us to discuss good ways to deal with stress, rather than the stereotypical (and, quite frankly, more common) substance abuse methods used by attorneys and law students across the country.

I deal with stress in these healthy ways:
– Bake for my family and classmates
– Sing in the shower
– Run a mile (or two) while listening to music
– Work Out
– Dance It Out
– Scream into a pillow

Okay…maybe the last one is not the greatest, but it’s certainly not destructive. Sometimes a good ARGHHHHHHH does the body good.

Find something that works for you. Relaxing, cooking, dancing….anything that could help you relieve stress in a healthy way – find your stress relief.
If you need to talk to someone, PLEASE DO.

Law School – Remember to Breathe

lakeview

Law school exams are terrifying. Maybe you are not of the same opinion, but I personally do not do well with uncertainty. Truly, I do not mind taking the exam. Waiting for grades to post however is what I find stressful.

This semester, midterms were a welcome break from classes. There is so much information poured into my brain on a daily basis, I was ecstatic to find a few hours a day to apply what I’ve learned.

Now that exams are over, I’ve decided to alter my study methods. I recommend you take a long hard look at what is working for you, and what is not. Your legal education, especially in the 1L year, is tantamount to solidifying amazing internships and positions later on.

Pre-midterms, I read and briefed nearly every case for all classes. This is especially important in legal writing and research because it is impossible to keep all the cases straight without creating a case chart. I also dedicated at least 3 hours a day to reading and synthesizing my notes from each class.

Post midterms, I am spending at least two hours talking about the law aloud. I added this method to my study time and it made a world of difference for my understanding. You have to APPLY the law! Meaning, you need to actually work with it, change the fact pattern, and get down into the trenches of those circumstances.

Take the next few days to examine what you are doing well and what is time wasted. Law school, much like life, is about working smarter not harder. Learning the material is different for everybody, but you need to learn what works best for you.

This week is the best time to determine where you stand in each class, what you need to do to earn the best grade you possibly can, and to take stock of your abilities and shortcomings. This is no time to relax and lull yourself into a false sense of security.

These past 8 weeks flew past me.
You can bet I have set a plan in action and set meetings with professors to make sure I am making use of every tool available.

Make the best of your law school education as well. Get out there and be awesome!

5 Things No One Tells You about Law School

lawstudentquote

I started law school one month ago and, despite having a full week of orientation where I ended up with more questions than answers, I have finally figured out a few things. However, I am still basically riding a bicycle that’s on fire, while I’m trying not to fan the flames.  Here’s the good, weird, and shitty things I’ve come to realize this semester:

  1. To your friends and family – you’re a lawyer, even if you’re not actually one yet! Before you even start school, friends and family (and even rando-acquaintances) will start asking you for legal advice. Honestly, why would anyone want advice from someone who basically is 1/18th of the way through law school and knows nothing about the system? Because you know more than they do! Remind these folks that you have no clue what you’re doing, but welcome them to keep you on retainer once you pass the bar!
  2. The DRAMA is real. Law school is said to be like high school, which is true. There’s way more drama than there should be with people who spend so much time together, they may as well be related. What no one talks about is how quickly your perception of people will flip-flop. Some students come in and impress the pants off of you with their ability to spew about Federal Question Jurisdiction and Contract Defenses before classes have even started. If you meet this person…RUN!really-gif_2
You need to be on par with your study mates, otherwise, you’ll start to feel less than and it could lead to tanking your study methods, which could lead to lower grades.
  3. Food is LIFE – remember that! Studying is an all-consuming activity when school is your job. You forget to eat and start considering coffee as a major food group. Every professor tells you to “remember to eat healthy foods” and then follow that up with “I lived off of caffeine and the occasional Ramen cup…” So you start to think that it is physically acceptable to subsist on chai lattes and the occasional Kind bar. Now, not to throw shade on Kind bars (because really, they’re amazing and everyone should carry an extra on their person) but one of these delicious granola sticks is not sufficient enough to meet your caloric needs. I know it is a huge imposition to pre-pack a lunch and microwave it before heading to the library in order to silently fight someone over a study room – but your brilliant self will thank you for doing so.
  4.  Everyone feels like they’re drowning. EVERYONE. What you need to remember is that your legal education is a marathon, not a sprint. Sure, it sounds cliche, but this is the stone cold truth. You simply cannot read, brief, and interpret every case, for every class for the semester in 1 week, plus sleep and feed yourself. You are not a robot, nor are you capable of condensing and understanding the information you’re being water-boarded with unless it’s explained to you. Everyone in your class feels like the amount juggled is not sustainable – and everyone is right! So take a beat. Make some time for yourself and work on self-care, because it is completely possible to feel like you’re drowning and not actually drown. Pull up your big girl panties and straighten that crown. You’ve got this!tumblr_inline_n45dmohxog1r73ga0
  5. You are a sucky writer, crummy reader, and you have no clue what’s going on.
Law school is a trial-by-fire situation. What you need to remember is – one day, when you’ve graduated and can look back on this experience – you are the sum of your parts. Everything you learn can be applied to cases you will soon argue. You will be counted on more times than you can possibly imagine. You will be the knight slaying the dragon. But you have to start somewhere. Unfortunately, you can’t drink Lawyerade and know all the things. However, you will get better. Aim for progress, not perfection.

tumblr_m78g1mmig41ro2d43

Law school professors aim to break you down, and then they build you back up. You need to know what it feels like to fail – because you will…often. As a former teacher, let me tell you – this is just one step on your way to greatness. Try not to be the Debbie Downer, because no one will want to be around you. In the same token, don’t be the class know-it-all either. In my short experience, it’s best to be honest and straightforward with everyone, especially when you’re not understanding a concept.

Finally, share your struggle! Your legal education will be an uphill battle, but you’re certainly not alone. Dedicate time to study, focus on attainable daily goals, and carefully consider your dedicated study group peers, because you need to be surrounded by those who want you to succeed and can add value to your situation.

Kick Ass!

Shaking Off Stress

That’s right – I’m back bitches!

Here we are, 7 weeks into the semester…wondering, where the heck did the time go? Week 8 starts tomorrow, and I feel like this weekend didn’t even happen. I spent all day Saturday hacking up a lung, crumpled up into a ball, wishing for sweet, sweet death.

Marnie

Thankfully, it didn’t come.
Whew.
Sunday has proven a better health day. A breathe-easier, even though your lungs are on fire, kind of day. Honestly, I don’t have much to complain about. I’m sick. Boo. Despite all the crazy crap going on this semester, life is damn good. Aside from tomorrow being Monday, all is awesome!

giphy

My students are fantastic, my volleyball team nailed their first WIN, and the robotics team is programming like there’s no tomorrow! If there was no paperwork, I’d honestly teach for the rest of my life.
Since there is, I’ve started business school and am applying to law school.
Can you give me a WHUT, WHUT?

As I’ve finally gotten things squared-up and kicked my stress to the curb – I can get back to all things bloggy! The beau and I have been to three new restaurants, and have planned to visit three more! Bahahah! Foodles are always amazing! [Ok, not always…]

I’ve got to work on lesson plans now. Grrr…

Have a kick-ass week, my lovelies!
Get ready for a tasty recipe this week.

Finals Week Break Down

It’s crunch time. Literally. I’m stressing and dealing with some major sweat stains. I wish I could say they’re from working out, but that would be a straight lie.

soft pretzel gif

Finals week is here. No longer upon us, but knocking down the front door and taking us out. Us, as in all the lowly college students who work too much, stress too much and do everything other than too much homework. This semester I was high-strung, over-worked, ate too many calories and didn’t run damn near as much as I wanted to.
I spent more time in books and sitting at my kitchen table, pouring through calculus problems and crying about lesson plans.

It all boils down to this week.

I’m sitting in the Math building on campus, downing Snapple and Gardetto’s, trying to cram every last bit of Stoke’s theorem that can fit into these neurons. All I want to do is stop – and bake cookies, double-check my taxes, or maybe even sit in on my next dental check-up. Anything but study for this cal 3 exam.

Green's Theorem? Next please.
Green’s Theorem? Next please.

At least this is the last one.
I can relax in just a few minutes. It’s only 120 minutes to freedom; for another two weeks – then, we’re back in the grad school saddle again.

I sincerely hope your finals week [or other life challenge] is going better for you.
IF not, then dance it out.

Everything is better with a little dancing…and a slice of chocolate cake.

Study Nights

Midterms are HERE!I’ve got 3 exams in the next couple of days and would be completely lying to you if I said I wasn’t stressed. What happens when I stress, you ask? I BAKE! Ginormous amounts of cookies, brownies, blondies, cupcakes…pretty much using everything we have in the pantry and occasionally adding random “what happens when I add this” ingredients. It’s not quite full-on nerd science, but I still feel like Dr. Bunsen.

Sadly, I’ve been so consumed with studying that I haven’t even attempted to step away from this desk longer than a 10 minute coffee run and to buy some much needed hair products (seriously, frizz central over here). The boys tried to distract me earlier and all they got was my best “Quit it, I’m studying for my O.W.L.s!” exasperated look.

Best eye-roll, ever.

It’s been quite a week so far! I haven’t averaged more than 3 hours of sleep a night, naturally – I look and feel like a troll. Wicked sexy, huh?

Maybe I can get some baking in tomorrow. For now, I’ll share the nummlies we’ve had over the past few days. I’ll be sure to post recipes soon!

Despite all this yummy food, I’ve been hitting my 1200 cal mark! đŸ˜€ Thank goodness for squeezing this jiggliness in some spandex and getting to the gym! 7 pounds down, folks!

Legen….wait for it…DARY!

Study break, over! Getting back to my books.
