Wanderlust

Boston from the Charles River

This past weekend, I took an opportunity to run far from my notes, quizzes, and exam prep materials – three days before finals were set to begin.

My best friend asked if I had a mental death wish.

Truthfully, I snagged a great deal on airline tickets, and managed to fly from Dallas > Boston roundtrip for $22. I used a few of my airline points from previous flights with Southwest, and made sure to price check many flights before settling on this trip. How could I have passed up this opportunity?!

Since my fiancée’s brother lives in Boston, we stayed with him for the weekend. Overall, this trip cost us less than $400 – we paid for drinks, food, and a few bits of Boston swag –  and it was basically a wonderful wintry getaway.

After dropping off our bags, we took a short jaunt to Barcelona for brunch and their BYO Bloody Mary & Mimosa bar!

IMG_0007.jpg

The BM mix was delicious, and the Beau indulged in two of these bad boys. I tried the Peach nectar mimosa, but found the champagne was a bit much for my palate. Instead, I set my sights on the tapas brunch options. Between the 4 of us, we ordered french toast, two breakfast sammies, and a charcuterie board. Having been up and about in Dallas (to make our flight) since 4am, we were thrilled to scarf all this deliciousness down. I highly recommend you try this place!

IMG_0015.JPG

After brunch, we mosied on down to a quaint little coffee shop: Cafe Fixe. It was in the high 30’s and…well, I’m not going to justify coffee stops – because I’m kind of in love with trying all sorts of lattes. Let me live a little!

The warm cups and tasty coffee added a certain bounce to my step; so off we went to Public Garden via LYFT. Being from Dallas, where virtually everyone drives, taking cabs/Lyft/Uber rides was interesting. We discovered quickly though, with all the twists and turns in Boston roads, sometimes it is actually faster to take the train or just walk! In two days, we walked nearly 20 miles. It is safe to say we covered quite a bit of ground. I enjoyed every second of it.

There was just so much to see in this garden! Street performers, puppies playing, the winter photo sets, and even just the view of the city! Oh man, everything was amazing. Everyone was so friendly, and I was simply amazed with how pedestrian-friendly the city is; eateries, cafes, knick-knack shops, and pubs all interspersed. There was a surprise in every turn. While walking through the garden though, we took a few impromptu photos. We even saw a one man band! Mel said she’d only ever seen one in movies, so I took a short video to share. He was really nice, and his jams were great.

I did not realize how early the sun sets on the east coast, but it was only 3:15pm when the sky began to darken. With the trees lit and the skies frosty, Eddie walked us over toward Quincy Market, but we were sidetracked along the way! We found a winter village and had to hop inside. There were about fifty tiny stores, all with varying items and souvenirs. The Beau and I purchased a glass ornament for our Christmas tree, a tradition of sorts, and Melissa ended up with a few great gift options for family members. We all managed to find ourselves in a wine-tasting tent…let’s just say the Moscato was free-flowing, and the J. Lohr samples of Cabernet & Pinot Grigio were a great way to keep us toasty while we shopped. I even found a great pair of snowflake earrings to match my engagement ring [more on how he proposed! later].

All this walking, and the extra tastings of wine, made us (mostly me) hungry – which meant we trudged on to Quincy Market. I was practically vibrating with excitement from the day, and knew exactly what I wanted to eat. I specifically asked for a lobster roll, and boy did this little pop stand deliver!

IMG_0096

The service here was fast, friendly, and quite tasty! This oyster bar offered the best deal on lobster rolls; 1 roll, chips, and a beverage for around $21. The Beau never tried one before, and I couldn’t pass up a chance to have one while visiting the East coast. The buttered, toasted bread slice (what appeared to be Texas toast) was stuffed with a lettuce leaf and a heaping serving of their lobster mixture: lobster, celery, mayo, and secret sauce. Aside from the rogue crab shell in my sandwich, I’d say these guys have a great recipe! Melissa ordered the lobster bisque and the clam chowder (because what kind of foodie doesn’t compare?!) – both options were delish, but I preferred the chowder. It was hearty, and carried just the right amount of flavor balance.

After dinner, we opted to head back to the casa for drinks and a movie. After some discussion, we prepared for day two of our Boston Adventure, and then I snuggled up with some Property Law review questions before bed (because with the advent of the internet, my notes go with me everywhere). Notice what I did there? Life is all about balance.

Our second day in Boston was quite the trek. We ended up taking a Lyft ride to Cambridge, where we devoured some tasty eats at The Sinclaire. The waffle flight was a great size! With 3 different waffles on the plate, everyone sampled sumptuous options. The waffle batter is crispy and light, which is just the way I like mine! In addition to the waffles, we ordered the Benedict, an omelette, and a breakfast plate. I honestly have no complaints or suggestions. The dishes were phenomenal. One critique regarding the drinks was the orange juice in my mimosa had absolutely no flavor. For a girl who needs a punch of sweet, and a skosh of fizz, these mimosas were quite dull.

We spilled over into Cambridge, on the hunt for some great coffee. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across Crema. This quaint two-story shop makes their own peppermint marshmallows and makes a…wait for it…cocoa-mint-tea! ::GASP:: This drink haunts my foodie visions. I need to learn how to make it, because my tastebuds just did not know what to do with themselves. “Indulgence in a cup” is what Eddie said when he tasted it. wholly agree with this description.

While in Cambridge, I decided to go in search of a funny shirt I wanted. After all, I am in law school. May as well buy a neon sign, right? Enter: the shirt.

IMG_3847-1-e1512611179479-3994357932-1513040627619.jpg

After this purchase, we decided to walk around Harvard’s campus. It is huge. There were so many wonderful buildings and such rich history, but I can honestly say it is not as gorgeous as Baylor. My Alma Mater is better. Sorry, Harvard. We trekked quite a ways through campus, and enjoyed the winter foliage; we even visited the Co-op, because I manage to drift toward books. The day was beautiful, but still nippy outside. A scarf and coat suited me just fine.

Before heading back, we stopped in at Mike’s! It’s this little shop of pastries. Eddie did not have to tell me twice! He had me at cannoli. The Beau & I purchased an espresso cannoli, almond and chocolate-dipped biscotti, macarons, a Boston creme puff, and Italian wedding cookies. YUM! I have absolutely zero regrets with this decision. Haven’t you heard…calories don’t count during finals season!

From Cambridge, we took the train back toward the South Side. Due to track construction, we ended up hopping off just before getting to the Charles River. Getting to see the city from that vantage point was breathtaking. I wished I’d been able to see it covered in snow. <3

IMG_3669-e1512611208271-931076064-1513040641525.jpg

Eddie told us that just beyond the bridge was a great hidden bar, that would change our lives. “Don’t worry Sarah, it’s only a 12 minute walk.” thankfully for Eddie, there was so much to see and snap pictures of…you know, the whole touristy thing. I quickly fell in love with this city. I even found an iceberg!

IMG_0180.JPG

Seriously though…we didn’t make it to the bar (called DRINK) for another hour. Longest walk of my life. Thankfully, Eddie was not kidding. The bartender was amazing! He asked what flavors I liked, and then made me a fantastic drink. I actually ordered two of the same thing! I figured it didn’t hurt to get a little relaxed.

In addition to the great beverages, this little place has some flavor-packed food. We tried their pork sliders and the fries with aioli. The bar atmosphere was dark, almost like being in a wine cellar; this makes sense, since it’s technically below street level. Our bartender lit several drinks on fire, and was daring enough to pour flames from one cup to another – I was fascinated.

IMG_3782

The bartender suggested we head over to Gaslight for dinner. It was a great idea! Their charcuterie board held wondrous flavors! The duck confit and chicken pate surprised me, because I was pretty sure I couldn’t get past what it was to actually enjoy it. But hey, I figure you’ve got to taste the food to see how you feel about it, right? From start to finish, this meal was good, but certainly not the best of Boston; my steak frites left much to be desired; not even the bernaise sauce could save it. Melissa ordered the sweet potato ravioli, and basically felt like she was elevated to the highest of pasta tables. The boys tried the prix fixe menu, and really enjoyed it. Few words were spoken once the plates hit the table here, but the oddities caught our attention: tart oranges on the créme brulée, not fully-cooked pasta edges, overcooked steak. That said though, this board was enough reason to eat at Gaslight:

IMG_3828.jpg

After Gaslight, we traipsed over to another bar for a nightcap with a friend. We laughed, I snorted really loudly and turned eight shades of red, and enjoyed each other’s company. [Being among lovely people is such a pleasure, especially when they’re smart, funny, and just the right amount of sassy.] This was the best way, by far, to end the night. Our trip was wonderful, and I plan on turning this “leaving before exams” idea into a bona fide tradition. (D.C. – we’re heading your way in March!)

Cheers to you friends! Good luck on your final exams.
May the curve be ever in your favor.

Rolling Craps + Bright Lights

This post is several weeks late. I wanted to update y’all, really – but I had this crazy notion that 2L year was going to be smooth sailing. Don’t ask me where the delusion came from, because I have no answers for you. Here’s what you need to know – law school is still incredible, and I love learning new concepts; but then, sometimes, law school will kick you in the gut. That fierce blow will hit you when you’re not ready for it, and you just have to suck it up and keep going. This semester’s workload is 16 course hours of craziness, but I honestly can’t complain about much. The best advice I can give regarding schedules is simple: Seek Balance & Move Forward.

My way of moving forward (after realizing the insane workload I put on myself this semester) resulted in making an off-hand comment about how I wanted to fly to Vegas, play craps, and eat some damn good food. My wonderful friends decided that was a top-notch idea.

9 airline tickets later – boom. Vegas, baby!

IMG_3085
Now, traveling as a law student is difficult, but certainly not impossible. Since the Beau and I traveled with friends, we received discounts on the rooms (block purchase rate), and split the costs of a limo (which was cheaper than taking 3 separate Uber rides or cabs). Additionally, we occasionally split the bill for food, and kept each other in check when it came to table gambling.

I think it is extremely important to work hard and reward those efforts. After participating in Moot Court, organizing various school events, and taking on a new personal chef role (gotta pay the bills, peeps) – I needed this time to wind down. Unfortunately, there really is no great time to travel during law school. This trip happened three days before midterms – which happened to work out in the most wonderful way. I gambled, then went back to my room and studied: Con Law, Professional Responsibility, Wills, and Property. I took my outlines with me and reviewed on the flight there, and back again. I made sure to study at least two hours, for every 4 hours spent flitting about the city.

These wonderful people kept me on track most of the trip. Melissa managed to wrangle me into the spa for several hours (the nerve, right?! :P) – but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We walked about 5 miles each day, and indulged in some delicious treats.

The breakfast plates at Hash Hash A Go Go were gigantic, and so yummy!

IMG_3058

Although we did sneak a meal in at Giada’s, I simply was not pleased with their food during this trip. My plate was pretty terrible: soggy waffle, basic plating, and the Crab-cake Benedict was less-than-appetizing. Thankfully, everyone else’s dishes were tasty. Their gluten-free muffins were my favorite addition to their menu.

If you have the opportunity to travel, even if for a short period of time – I highly recommend doing so. Take the trip. Eat the cake. Or, in our case – drink the chocolate cake shot. I find that the best things happen when I step just outside of my comfort zone.

Enter: The Chocolate Cake Shot!

IMG_3042

This teensy drink packed a helluvalot of flavor. Never had I tasted such a yummy drink. While in Vegas, I threw back several of these. The bartender at Guy Fieri’s in the Linq knew exactly who we were every time we walked in. #GreatGuy

After many drinks, impromptu dancing, and an amazing massage – we flew back to Dallas, in time for midterms. I approached the week with a rejuvenated feeling and overall sense of calm. I needed this trip, more than I thought. It may seem like a ridiculous stunt to pull before exams, but I enjoyed myself immensely. No regrets.

What are you doing to handle your stress?

Meal-Prep Monday

salad

Today was such a great day! Hellaciously long – but great! I made my day much easier by packing my breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner (that’s right – freaking dinner) before leaving for class this morning.

Mondays are my long days. 14 hours on campus. 9am-11pm. Brutal. The key to making it through such a time-intensive day, is to plan for meals. I’m basically a rogue honeybadger, and completely fit for a Snickers hangry commercial, when I lack sustenance. In an effort to keep myself from fast-food lunch runs, or snapping at my peers for chewing too loudly, I made the effort to pack my lunch.

crazy-test.gif

I’m trying to eat healthy, without breaking the bank. Student loans are enough debt for me to be in, without adding in eating out and coffee runs. Don’t get me wrong – splurging every now and then is awesome; I simply can’t live every day that way. My world would crumble and my credit score would, presumably, implode.

Foregoing chaos to my financial situation, it made much more sense to prep my meals. It’s simple. Either pack something you made for dinner the night before; or, put together a set of five protein boxes on Sunday night. My inspiration came from the Starbucks box, which is tiny and compact. I needed a bit more oomph in my meal, so I added turkey and an extra cheese stick instead of the grapes.

4 slices of turkey + 1/2 apple + 2 Mozz sticks + 1 egg + grape tomatoes + Cucumber slices
That’s all.

IMG_2672
Super Simple. Clean Eating.

Since I don’t like eating the exact same thing every day for a week (unless that something happens to be Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli), I made 3 boxes; there are just enough to get me through the hectic part of my week. On Wednesday night, I’ll make sandwich pinwheels!

In addition to my protein box, I packed some snacks! They were perfect to munch on during class. I did feel a bit like a chubby squirrel though, and I’m not entirely sure I wasn’t making too much noise while trying to woodchuck the pretzels. No one complained. Hopefully.

IMG_2673.jpg
Utz Pub Mix + Cashews & Raisins

See? Meal prepping is easy! Don’t let the “prep” scare you. Just pick a few things you love to eat, place them into a portable container, and voilà! Personally, I do not enjoy eating the same thing every day – which is why small-batch cooking works well. I’ll be sure to post some recipes for breakfast sandwiches, tacos, and lunch boxes – SOON!

In the meantime, tell me – what are you planning on taking with you this week?

Mesero – Dallas

Summer

The Beau and I brunched at Mesero on Sunday. We took the pups, which was a riot – because getting to the patio (with a blocked entrance…fire hazards be damned) was challenging.

Our original plan was to eat at a pet-friendly restaurant (which is a short list in Dallas proper). Now, I’d eaten at Mesero before and was not super thrilled to go back. However, we were now trapped by cars on all sides and there was no end in sight to get our Jeep back from the valet…so off we went toward the bright umbrellas (seriously, they’re ORANGE). The seating hostess was nice, but when we got to our table, the group nearest us leaned over to say the service was sub-par. One patron went so far as to point out which waiter to avoid!

Their brunch menu is small, but the portions are HUGE. Here’s wahat you need to know:

  1. They portion control the tortilla chips. Which is completely NOT okay.
I’m a firm believer in spreading the chips and salsa love; if you see two people at a table, and you serve chips in a tiny 10oz container that can only fit 14 crisps (yes, I counted them) – then, by the sweet Gods in heaven, bring more chips!IMG_1531
  2. The plates look great, but that does not necessarily mean they’re good. My french toast wasn’t cooked. It was a burned glaze on the outside and a mushy cinnamon-flavored mess on the inside. Normally I don’t send food back, but the Beau insisted because they were completely inedible. They did a better job on the second try, but it was still undercooked. 🙁 One redeeming quality is the whipped cinnamon butter that comes with the warmed maple syrup to drizzle over the toast. Absolutely sinful. And yet – tragically – not enough of a reason to come back to this pop stand.IMG_1533
  3. Their chilaquiles (eggs + chicken + salsa + corn chips) were fantastic. Honestly, their salsa verde brings all the ingredients together in a magical concoction. I’d certainly order that dish again. But I probably will not be back here. Two times, you’re out. Their dinner is pricey and you don’t really get much. Basically, if I can make it in my own kitchen – then why bother going to the restaurant?
  4. In a crazy twist – the cocktails are pricey! Nearly every drink cost more than an actual brunch dish. What in the actual hell? Just know, if you do order one (we ordered the Meserita) then you’ll be plastered on just one drink. Fair warning.

wait, what?

Overall, we were not too pleased with this brunch spot. I felt like I could seriously teach the Chef a thing or two about Mexican cooking (or whatever they think they’re actually making…). We will not likely be back, barring some sort of kitchen-staff overhaul and a change in menu options.

I hope you’re enjoying your summer break!

Meal Prep for the Busy Law Student

Usually, I meal prep on Sunday. However, I was quite disenchanted with the mere thought of cooking then, and the kitchen passion didn’t quite hit me Tuesday, or today either, hence – I continued to procrastinate. [law school daze, right]

Put if off until tomorrow…I was happy with this decision.
Until I opened the fridge in the morning to pack my lunch and realized – I didn’t have lunch! Well, damn. Joke’s on me.

noidea
What was I expecting?

With assignments, study groups, reading, and trying to have a semblance of a social life (let’s face it – this one is definitely on the back burner right now) – time quickly passes. I chose to be law school lazy. My couch called my name, the dogs begged for tummy rubs, and I simply refused to cook.

Here I am, Wednesday evening, running on a cup of coffee, a bagel, and a pack of plain m&ms…the tummy grumblings arrived.
You know all too well how difficult it is to study on an empty stomach.
Sometimes it’s easier to pick up a meal on the way home; that option (for three adults) racks up a pretty penny, and fast!

Most weeks, I meal prep. Our pantry is stocked with everyday basics: rice, beans, pasta, risotto, polenta, cereal, Triscuit, bread, tuna….the list goes on with pretty much any canned or dried good you can imagine (even baby corn – yep, I make sure we have it in case a stir-fry craving hits)! But Finals are upon us – which means I’m in study mode and too nervous/busy/panicked/tired to spend that much time in the kitchen (aside from sress baking, of course)!

Thank goodness for meal prep services!
Last week, we opted to give FRESHLY a try!
We got to pick 12 meals, FRESHLY cooked and pre-packaged them, then delivered them directly to our front door.

Is this unbelievably convenient? YES.
Will we splurge on this every week? Likely, no.

However if the meals are good – then we can order them for busy weeks!

restaurant-delivery-site-reviews

Tonight we tried two of the meals: [Jerk Chicken] & [Southwest Chipotle Bowl]

Pros: The food was not disgusting. I’ll be honest, I was terrified it was going to be awful. Then, I found myself pleasantly surprised with the plated meal. I was not over-the-moon about my meal option, but I’m glad I tried it.

Cons: The meals are drastically different in calorie count. :/ This was a major bummer. The meal I chose (Southwest Bowl) was 740 calories, while Angel’s Jerk Chicken meal came in at 500 calories. What. The. Heck?!

I ended up storing half my meal for lunch tomorrow, which means there’s a little bit of a “pro” in the “con.”

IMG_1175
The mango salsa was a nice touch
IMG_1176
Adding Cilantro to a dish does not make it “Southwestern-style”
IMG_1177
Not a “pretty” dish, but still tasty.

Overall, this first round was not half-bad. I’m excited to try the rest of the meals we ordered. I truly appreciate the convenience of this delivery service, but I’m not completely sold on the flavors or the price. Further recon necessary.

Have a great week!

Fierce & Fabulous!

Our Law School awarded us Spring Break last week, after a series of midterms. We were in bad need of some time off. My brain needed the break. I was dreaming about studying and forgetting (in the dream) to bring my pencil [for an electronic exam], which resulted in major waterworks and a few mini-panic attacks…all while sleeping!

damsel

Sure, it sounds far-fetched, but law school is a tough nut to crack and I made it just a tad bit more complicated because I couldn’t sit still. In a meeting of chance (see, these opportunities do come along), I was offered a Clerkship [paid position] with the Probate Court and I took the job! I have learned more than I can type in one post, and get to work directly with one of the Judges. I am working my Clerkship and attending classes, while juggling other extra-curricular activities. Worth it? YES!
I am in a perpetual state of exhaustion, which a girl can get used to; but burning the candle at both ends takes a toll. Which is why you need to get good at the balancing game: Going out v. Staying In.

genius

Ok, I obviously cannot take full credit for this idea, but I will take credit for reminding you to take a damn break! Read for fun! [Gasp, I know. But, your neurons will thank you for the time away from taking in Tacking and Tolling statutes or even The Model Penal Code.  Trust me. This past week I only took one day off, despite being on Spring Break. I continued to work through the week, because I honestly love my job. However, the Judges knew I did not have class and refused (yes, they completely opposed) to see me on Friday, effectively forcing me to take the day off. Why? Well, because they were law students once and remember the daily grind. Do you understand? Taking time for yourself is NOT a luxury, it is a necessity. It’s a lesson I grapple with every day, but I am getting better at it.

This weekend I spent some time with a few of my best friends, and even managed to sneak in a BRUNCH at a new (to me) spot in the Harwood District of Dallas! My friend, Adriana, celebrated a birthday and I was able to munch on breakfast pizza and bloody mary’s. Which, I would like to experience more in my life. The combination was wondermous!

Soooooo goood! I will most definitely return to Saint Ann’s Restaurant. Everything was scrumptious. We tried the pizza, everything omelette, biscuits and gravy, and strawberry shortcake french toast! Their mimosas were (per Adriana and Amanda) delicious. We enjoyed multiple carafes of their morning alcoholic beverages. Don’t judge me, we were relaxing a tad before reading Civil Procedure for our Monday class! Honest.

Adriana is fierce and fabulous. She always manages to find the best deals on clothes and accessories. Anyone who can walk into exams looking like a #boss should be celebrated. I am thrilled to call her my friend and am so happy that law school brought us together.

Remember that tribe I told you about? She’s a bona fide member. Love your peeps. They are your greatest asset (and those talks result in awesome deep-belly laughs, which is basically like doing crunches…so she’s a multi-tasking friendship).

IMG_0898

Happy birthday, love! I hope you enjoyed your break! <3

As for you, my wonderful reader, please take a few moments to recognize the wonderful people in your life. Thank your support system, make them feel cherished. Remember to get your nose out of the books and enjoy your life. Don’t stray too far from why you’re working so hard – otherwise, you may lose sight of your goal.

Be awesome, y’all!

3 Tips for Keeping Your Relationship Afloat In Law School

onewomanisland

In case you don’t already know – Law School is difficult. It’s an experience no one can understand until they’ve been through it. Yeah, you’ve heard that before – but it’s completely true. I feel that in order to get past the crappy parts, you need to pick a point in your near-future and focus on it like your entire life depends on getting there. If I break my concentration, letting other minutiae get in the way, then I not only derailed myself, but I get too lax with my thinking. It’s important to remember: the goal comes first.

The problem with that thought though? My goals are not wholly my own.
My entire being revolves around the existence of my other half. If I forget that he is part of my goals, then my anchor is missing. That just will not do.

Before beginning my legal education, I met with multiple professors (and Deans even) – all of whom said something about how relationships fail, in fact, “it’s expected!” Many of them had a horror story or two tell me about their own romances; each one left me more bummed than the last.

It didn’t help that we were required to read “1L of a Ride.”
No siree, that little gem only made me feel worse about beginning my legal education.
As midterms are fast approaching, I felt it prudent to dish out a few ways the Beau and I make our relationship work because, let’s face it – there will be no cooking, cleaning, organizing, or much talking from me for the next two weeks. Lord knows you’re going through this too, which means you may need to pass this to your significant other so they can get a glimpse of the madness that goes on in the mind of a law student. Or, you know, so they can see they’re not the only one being neglected

IMG_2940

  1. We work to make each other laugh. He’s an engineer and I’m in law school – which means that we have healthy debates about everything from furry socks to download internet policy law (seriously). But, in between the long talks and coffee runs, he makes me laugh! The deep down, belly-ache type of laughter that brings tears and snorts to my daily life. By comparison, he might catch me talking to the vegetables or dancing with chicken in the kitchen (yeah, I have some flair).
  2. Set time aside for the people you love. I plan my life around campus activities, meetings, classes, and study time – but there’s also brunch, coffee runs, and gym time! I’ve said this multiple times….ORGANIZE your LIFE!
Sure, adding calendar events may seem tedious, but having the reminders to work on assignments (or even to eat lunch) are crucial to acing your legal education. As an added bonus, your family will appreciate the time you make for them in your crazy-hectic law school soap-opera lifestyle.blogcalendar
  3. This last one is the most important. You need to remember that even though your end goal is to become a badass attorney, you also need to make time to build yourself up. It is necessary for you to carve a few minutes out of your week to do something that makes you insanely happy. My happy place? Anywhere, surrounded by books.
No, I don’t lurk around our law library (okay…sometimes). I enjoy walking around Half-Price books, Barnes and Noble, or even the local Dallas Public libraries. My heart feels happier when surrounded by the magical tales and giant encyclopedias.
You need to find your happy place. Make time to focus on yourself, for a few minutes a week. The reason this helps (your relationship and your studies) is because by focusing on what makes you happy – you are physically and emotionally re-centering your life. Balance is a key to any major endeavor; in law school, you need it in spades.

Now go out there and be amazing.

Law Student Reviews: Hello Fresh

jogging

Balancing a schedule is beyond hectic in law school. I imagine it’s similar to actually practicing law. There are deadlines, meetings, prep sessions, after-hours events – the list continues…

What I find particularly challenging is working out and eating well between reading and briefing cases. Since I’ve been sorely lacking in the “workout plan” department, I felt I should pick up the slack on the healthy eating. Because, I can get pretty comfy with Mountain Dews and a granola bar. That’s sorta healthy – right?

Honestly, I will zone out pretty much anything and everyone while I’m reading and prepping for class. If my stomach growls, I usually have a protein bar on hand. That’s the extent of fancy. For this simple reason – I meal prep. Funnily enough, I don’t meal prep the same thing five days in a row. I love leftovers, but not three meals in a row.

So I plan meals for the week and make a few on Sunday. If I forget to prep, my wallet takes a huge hit. Since classes are downtown, I can get virtually anything delivered via Favor, UberEats, or DoorDash; a marvelously quick way to eat through my coffee budget. :[

In an effort to help me balance my life a bit better, I decided to try Hello Fresh
Plus, this week we’re getting back into the GYM! #summergoals

I surprised the Beau [mostly because he paid for it and had no clue until the box arrived]. He seemed pretty excited to open the box, though. HelloFresh sends all the ingredients (aside from Salt, Pepper, and Oil) in one refrigerated package. It sits patiently on your doorstep until you get home to tear it open and exploit its yummy goodness. Um, you know – cook the things.

I was happy with the packaging. Each meal fits perfectly into rectangular boxes, but the meat is packed separately (for obvious health reasons). The box includes a recipe book, which is usually about 6 steps or less and includes pictures! Super neat.

We started with the Broccoli Beef recipe. What made me chuckle is that I already had nearly all of the ingredients in my pantry for this dish. It’s clearly a family fave! I was happy with the overall turnout, but I think the flavor could have packed a bigger punch – possibly improving the beef seasoning.

Following the recipe was simple and satisfying. If you are new to the kitchen, or maybe not so comfy with your current chefiness, then HelloFresh is perfect for you! If you’re already adept, then I’d say you should try a box anyhow! I enjoyed the speedy delivery (waited only 3 days for my first box) and the convenience of groceries delivered straight to my home. Sure, Tom Thumb and Sprouts (partnered with Amazon) are providing home delivery options – but the terrible experience with Sprouts has me worried about any other grocery delivery methods.

We will likely only use HelloFresh on a monthly basis, or during weeks when I know my schedule will be off the charts. The Beau can even follow instructions and cook our dinner for a change of pace! Wouldn’t that be scrumptious?

Brunch is still Legal…I think

sissys

After all these Executive Orders, I’m happy to report on a happier topic.
The Bestie & I tried a new (to us, anyhow) brunch spot in Dallas.

Sissy’s Southern Kitchen is a kitzschy country kitchen on Knox-Henderson. We’ve visited twice and, with a bit of help from family, tried all (but one) recipes on the menu. Since brunch is basically my favorite meal, I believe I found my happiest place in Dallas. Which, let me be clear, is an amazing feat! I mean, this glorious little once-was house, tucked away behind a few trees and their own Valet stand, rivals bookstores and my own kitchen.
Color me impressed.

If you’re ever in Dallas and need to loosen your belt a few notches, stop by Sissy’s. They’ll be more than happy to whip up a lil’ something for you to nosh on.

These squash puppies are accompanied by whipped butter and a house-made jalapeno jam. Honestly, I could deal without the puppies, but this jam needs to be in my life. It is sweet, with a surprising bite of spice and sass that battles taste buds.

I’d never tried Fried Green Tomatoes – nor have I read the book – but my Mimi said I was missing out. So we just had to order them. Cut to this interesting take on tomatoes landing in front of us. They’re moderately thick tomatoes, evenly sliced, and generously coated in a cornmeal batter; fried to perfection, accompanied by a shrimp remoulade, green peas, and scallions. Did I say, perfection already?

The short rib hash is basically a pot roast, diced potatoes, and sunny side up eggs. I wanted to be more impressed, but this just was not among my top favorites. Don’t get me wrong – it’s still quite tasty, but this hash is simply not Sissy’s best effort here. This dish left me feeling underwhelmed.

Do you see all that buttah? Butter is an essential need to this brunch menu and it’s probably why I love Sissy’s so damn much. The bacon arrived sizzling and introduced the waffles quite nicely.

This. This here. The crab cake mac and cheese has been a Sissy’s special for a few weeks now. I must say, the chef makes a glorious mac and cheese. Don’t believe me, watch the video below. It’ll make your tummy tingly in all the best places.

Now, we were pretty full (jeans unbuttoned) by this point. Then the waitress said they made the best chocolate cake in Dallas. The reigning champ, in case you’re wondering, is the Cheesecake Factory’s Linda’s Fudge Cake. I had no choice but to order dessert.

Sadly, they looked better than they tasted. Good, but not nearly impressive enough.

I hope you have a chance to brunch here. You’ll thank me for the suggestion.
